Does A C-Section Make You Fat?

Here are some concerning results of a new study: Adults that were originally born by a Cesarean section are more likely to become obese than those adults who were born vaginally. According to this study C-sections could be an additional factor in the obesity epidemic.Does a C-Section Make you fat?

This new study comes out of Brazil. In this fairly new study, Brazilian researchers discovered that from more 2,000 test individuals (age: 23 to 25 year-olds), about15 percent of those who were born via C-section were obese compared to about 10 percent of those who were born vaginally. The researchers tried to eliminate many other factors related to obesity, but their numbers stayed pretty strong as reported above.

So, the question “does a C-Section make you fat” is geared toward the baby/adult and not the mother. However, as a mother this information is important, too. Raising a healthy child and teaching healthy eating habits now has become even more important. If parents let healthy eating habits slip, children could pay a steep price by the time they become grown-ups.

There is also no reason to panic. This is the very first study that reports these kind of results. Many more studies need to be made to confirm these finding or to prove them not to be accurate enough. Researchers have many reasons that eventually explain obesity in adults and these different reasons need to be put into consideration here as well. One of the concerns is that usually obese women tend to deliver babies via C-Section and a family history of obesity will lead to having an overweight baby which then turns into an obese toddler/child/teenager/grownup.

However, no matter what a possible family health history suggests, healthy eating habits should be standard. We have to lead by example and show our children that there are better food choices than Fast Food, Candy, and other unhealthy food + it is very important to teach children to avoid over-eating and to choose moderate portions. Don’t supersize me! In addition, motivating kids to do physical exercise is another critical piece for a healthy weight and overall body health.

Conclusion: One study does not prove that C-Section born babies are really at higher risk to become obese later on in life. However, I personally see it as a great reminder to eat responsible and to make healthy choices when it comes to eating. Combine that with a decent amount of physical exercise and life should be good. Need some recommendations and ideas? Check here and here.
