Your Pregnancy - week by week. Week 1 to 4

Week 1

Week one begins with the first day of your menstrual period. Conception has not happened yet! Your period has now started and you are already thinking about possible conception and to make it happen this time. For the average woman with a 28-day cycle, the ovulation occurs about 14 days after the start of the menstrual cycle. At this point you should be taking prenatal vitamins and live healthy. Make sure you add folic acid to your diet. Whatever you do at this point can already have an impact on the future baby to be.

Week 2

There is no fetal development yet. You have not conceived yet. Your uterus is now preparing to be able to house a growing fetus. Your eggs are ripening for release. Normally only one egg is going to be released when the time is there. If the Mom to be is on a 28-day cycle, (counting from the first day of the last period) D-Day (Day 14) should be the end of this week.

Week 3

Around the 14th day from the start of your last period, a ripened egg is released from the woman’s ovary and is directed into the fallopian tube where conception occurs. Mom and Dad now have an important job to do. Make love. Conception has eventually happened. The sperm now travels to meet the egg somewhere within the fallopian tube and the wonderful miracle of life eventually begins. At the important moment of conception, the baby's gender is determined based to the sex chromosomes in the father's sperm.

Some women may eventually experience some spotting or bleeding at the time the conception. However - most women are unaware of the exact moment of conception.

Week 4

The egg has arrived at its final destination. Now implantation occurs. At the end of this week the woman’s period would usually start. If you have conceived and are pregnant you will enjoy quite a few months without having a period. The first signs of pregnancy can appear: no period, fatigue, breast soreness, and mood swings.
