Pregnancy - week by week: Week 5 – 6
Week 5
The fetal development starting with the 5th week goes as follows. The development of the new embryo can be split into three layers. The top layer is called the Ectoderm and is the place where the nervous system will be. This includes the brain, the spinal cord, skin, and hair. The middle layer the heart, the circulatory system, the bones, the muscles, and organs like the kidneys will develop. This also includes the reproductive organs. Scientists have shown that the circulatory system is the very first organ to function. The last (but not least) layer is called Endoderm. Here is where the intestines, the liver, the pancreas, and the bladder will develop.
Many women still do not fully realize that they are pregnant at this point if they have not been planning for it.
The hormonal changes in your body that are caused by pregnancy may eventually cause your breasts to be swollen and tender as the milk glands multiply. Morning sickness can happen more often and your desire to eat may increase. Slowly but surely your now growing uterus will start to put pressure on your bladder. This will start the frequent trips to the bathroom. Please be aware that your specific symptoms do not necessarily meet this description. Every woman is different and so can be signs of pregnancy.
Week 6
Baby’s first heartbeats have begun! An exciting moment for every parent. The baby is now officially an embryo and is about 1/17 of an inch in length. The growth rate during week 6 is very strong. The umbilical cord now develops, too. The little baby’s body is forming quickly. The eyes and ears begin to develop as well as the mouth is finding its spot. The heart has begun to pump blood through the little body and most of the other organs are “under construction”. Little buds are forming on the little body that will eventually become baby’s arms and legs.
Nausea is usually hitting you during week 6 and is accompanied with constant morning sickness. The first cravings for certain food will make it onto your mind. Again – your mileage may vary, as not every woman has to deal with morning sickness or nausea. If you haven’t already – stop smoking and you should stay away from consuming any alcohol. If you are taking certain medications and drugs, you should immediately consult with your doctor. Time for the first prenatal doctors appointment if you have not scheduled one yet. Most doctors ask you not to come into their office before week 6.
