TEEN Pregnancy / IInformation / Tips & Tricks for Teens When Pregnant

Teenage pregnancy is literally defined as the pregnancy occurring in women under the age of 18 years or 21 years (depending upon the age specifications of the particular country). In the United States the term holds true for girls younger than 18 years of age. Although the phenomenon is entirely biological but it has to it several social and ostracism issues.

Overview

Usually the reproductive maturity of girls occurs at an early age of around 12-14 years. But the physical frame and mental development is too sparse to carry on with the responsibilities of rising up a baby besides other social factors. The phenomenon is graver in developing and under-developed countries where problems of poor educational levels, high poverty and lack of adequate health services often augment the obstacles faced therein.

Causes

o Socio-economic customs in under-developed countries : In some background societies, early marriage and traditional gender roles are factors in increasing teenage pregnancy rate. Unawareness of contraceptives and overall prevention techniques also lead to higher teen pregnancy.

o Adolescent sexual activities :  Most of the teenagers in a relationship feel that their partner’s desires led them into early sexual activities. Lack of knowledge and inexperience about contraceptives and other prevention methods also lead to higher risk of pregnancy among teenagers.

o Sexual abuse : Immoral activities like rape and other forms of physical harassment also tend to raise pregnancy counts among teenage girls.

Tips and tricks during teenage pregnancy

o Consult a doctor immediately : Apart from the social and emotional issues for a pregnant teen, she needs to be in constant consultation with a doctor. Efficient prenatal care is necessary for the baby to have proper weight, health and immunity to several undesirable diseases.

o Reduce the intake of caffeine : Coffee and chocolates need to be minimal as caffeine reduces the amount of oxygen that the fetus receives. Increased smoking and caffeine can lead to abnormal births or miscarriage.

o No Alcohol or drugs : Use of alcohol or excessive drugs as preferred by many outgoing teenagers in developed countries is extremely hazardous to the pre-natal period in teens. Drugs, alcohols or narcotics like cocaine, marijuana, LSD during pregnancy are bound to induce problems like miscarriage, abnormal growth, and prematurity or low body weight.

o Nutrient diet : A pregnant teen must focus heavily on her diet chart as prescribed by the dietician or doctor consulted thereof. A pregnant teen requires around 300-800 calories per day. Extra nourishments – vitamins, minerals, folic acid, calcium, iron and others must also be reinforced from time to time so as to cater to the needs of the growing fetus.

o Regular exercise : Indoor activities like yoga, swimming, walking are recommended for the pre-natal period. These kind of regular exercises keep the body in fine touch and also contribute to the development of the fetus.

o Abundant sleep : Getting plenty of rest during pregnancy also tones up the fatigue and lassitude incurred during daily routine activities. Sleeping on one’s side and lying with knees bent is the most comfortable posture.
