Boy or Girl?  Why Some Women Don’t Want To Know

To know or not to know, that is the question!  For many parents, this question is a “no-brainer.”  Knowing the gender of your baby helps in determining which baby clothes to buy and how to decorate the baby’s room.  You wouldn’t want to get a princess rocking chair for your little slugger, would you?  But does “knowing” take away from the excitement and intrigue that comes with not knowing?  With modern technology, it seems like nothing is left to the imagination anymore concerning the birth and sex of your unborn child.  According to a recent poll done by The Baby Center, an overwhelming 78% of Moms-to-be wanted to know the gender of their child beforehand.  But what about that small but all-important 22% of parents who do not?  And can you really be “sure” of the baby’s sex, even after having an ultrasound?

Statistics from a recent survey revealed that 27% of the women who were “sure” they knew the sex of the child they were carrying were surprised (to say the least) when they found out that they were wrong.  Historically, ultrasounds have been found to be incorrect 15% of the time.  These are pretty high statistics to contend with.  It leads one to think that you might be better off not knowing that being disappointed by the results when the baby arrives.  And many parents agree that it is better to find out the baby’s gender at delivery.  According so some very patient moms, here are some reasons why they decided to wait, and you can too—if you think you can handle nine months of suspense!

1. They like the surprise—like opening a present.  To them, not knowing until the end is a part of what makes pregnancy exciting.
2. Many feel that it helps make the last few weeks of pregnancy bearable, as they have something “extra” to look forward to.
3. They are free to fantasize about both little boys and little girls.  The possibilities are endless.
4. Some even admit that it’s an opportunity to annoy relatives.  People want to know what you’re having more so than when the baby is due.  It keeps them in suspense.
5. For a variety of reasons, some parents have an aversion to technology.  They’d rather do it the old fashioned way.
6. Forgoing the ultrasound and waiting until delivery allows them to be 100% sure of the baby’s gender and avoid the disappointment of preparing for one gender and having the other.
7. Waiting leaves no room for denial.  Because many women are aware of the ultrasound’s error rate, they still don’t fully accept the results (especially when it’s not the sex they were hoping for) and secretly wish they are among the erroneous 15%, keeping hope and denial alive until the very end.

Whether parents decide to find out or not, there is one thing they all can agree on.  Invariably with every parent, the sex of the child takes a backseat to their health and well-being.  All would agree that what they really want is a child that is healthy.
