Work at Home Moms – What really is Happening
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people that work at home has grown substantially over the last decade. Many of those that reported to work from includes moms (WAHMs – Work at home Moms).
In general the number of people that work full-time at home went up about 23 percent from the numbers reported for the last decade. Approximately 4.2 million people worked at home as reported in the 2000 census report. The number of people that work at home grew at a solid rate with nearly double the 12 percent growth rate of the overall work force during that time.
Personally I feel that there are four main reasons for the large gain that was reported. First of all is the trend of new moms who do not want to split their attention between family and career. The work at home moms choose both and are happy they do, because working at home at home allows them to pursue a fulfilled family life and a career. The second reason for the reported growth was the recession that began in the early 2000’s and manifested itself in by early 2003 which “motivated” many Americans to start working on their small business ideas or setup special home based jobs for moms so that a job loss of the main household income would be less an issue. Third is the increased accessibility to technology (the Internet / DSL and Cable Internet) that allows work at home jobs to become more and more available. Fourth, I strongly believe that more and more employers are increasingly beginning to accept the concept of tele-commuting by creating work at home jobs and allowing their employees to take advantage of those new opportunities.
Of course the 2000 census data is outdated by now and there will be a new census in 2010, but it will take a while for that data to become available. Since 2007 the US is in a recession and many of us have actually felt this way before the official “start date” that the economy was going down the drain. I have been working on reviewing a few of the current work at home (or work from home) opportunities that might fight the busy schedules of moms that want to work from home. Check out the following websites and see if one of those are a fit for you. Some of my friends have found a way to work from this way and aim to eventually replace their main household income this way entirely.
