Soy Milk is advertised as a great alternative to regular milk. As someone who is lactose intolerant, soy-based products like soy milk have been my off and on choice over the last few years. Soy milk is full of protein and rich in vitamins and simply said, it should be pretty healthy. But I discovered the dark side of soy milk and I am willing to share it with you – right here, right now.

Over the last few years I have developed food allergies that I did not have when I was younger (I am 44). I get horrible bloating and diarrhea from normal milk. I suffer from frequent sinus infections a lot. I get gas and nausea from certain foods. It’s like … I am getting older and if that’s how it feels … Yuck!!! And then I tried Soy Milk and what was a good first experience, apparently came with a big pile of problems. According to Aimee E. Raupp (author of a Soy and Food related book), “Eating soy may make your period irregular, compromise your ability to get pregnant; it can give you osteoporosis, horrible gas, zero energy and hypothyroidism.” While some of those issues apply to women only, there is a lot about side effects of Soy Milk (or Soy products in general) that is gender independent.

So, Soy Milk is indeed bad for you, but it depends on how much you actually have. The one thing I did not like about Soy Milk right from the start was the high amount of sugar that many brands have. Apparently that stuff must taste awful without artificial flavoring of some sort. So, with more knowledge about Soy Milk and Soy products it is much easier to plan the weekly shopping. Right now I am more on Lacto-free milk and it actually tastes pretty good. It seems a little more watery, but you need to try different brands before finding one that you really like.

If you are trying to get pregnant I would recommend to drop that Tofu and eat something else. Stay away from Soy products for a while – especially if you have been trying to get pregnant for a while already. If you still want to consume Soy products anyway, make sure that you only buy products that use “whole” and “unrefined” Soy. These Soy products are easier to digest by your body. Modified Soy products (genetically modified or isolated soy) are something most people will have problems to digest – especially in larger amounts. In addition, depending on where your Soy comes from, it might have been heavily treated with pesticides. Again, using whole and unrefined types of Soy often equals organically grown Soy. It will pay off to do some research at first and then to settle on a specific brand or product.

PS: I have not had a chance to review Aimee’s claims; she is a respected author and expert on her topic though. Please consult with your OBGYN or primary care physician as needed.
